Upcoming Exhibit at Arts Place

April 20, 2018 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

On April 20th, a new exhibit will be on display in the gallery, at Arts Place Portland Center. The exhibit is entitled “An Alternate View.” All of the pieces were created by photographer Barbara Eberhard. The pieces, however, are not mere photographs. Eberhard uses an alternative printing process of photography that dates back to the 1880’s. Through this process, called gum bichromate, Eberhard uses layers of pigment and hardened Gum Arabic to create works of art that resemble a cross between photography and watercolor.  She describes the process as, “a very meditative, hands-on process, manipulating and ‘creating’ an image, rather than simply recording it.”

Barbara Eberhard is an avid street and still life photographer. She has taught for over twenty years as an adjunct professor at the University of St. Francis. Her work has been displayed at a variety of galleries in the region where it has been honored as Best in Show on multiple occasions.

The exhibit will remain on display from April 20, 2018 to May 20, 2018. It will be open for viewing during business hours at Arts Place, 131 E. Walnut St. Portland, Indiana. The exhibit is free and anyone is welcome to visit.

These activities are made possible, in part, with support from the Community Foundation of Randolph County, the Portland Foundation, the Indiana Arts Commission, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
