Before governments start pumping money into facial-recognition technology, the American Civil Liberties Union would like those in power to consider that it’s not as reliable as some might think.
To prove the point, the non-profit’s Northern California branch ran the photos of 120 California state legislators through a mugshot database and came up with 26 false matches labeling them as criminals.
At a press conference on Tuesday, Assemblyman Phil Ting, who is sponsoring a bill to ban the tech from police body cameras, told reporters the test shows “this software is absolutely not ready for primetime.”
